Description of the medicine: Methylenum coeruleum

METHYLENE BLUE (Methylenum coeruleum).

N, N, N ', N'-Tetramethylthionyl chloride.

Synonyms: Methylene blue, Methylenblau, Methylthionii chloridum.

Dark green crystal powder or dark green with bronze glitter crystals. Difficultly soluble in water (1:30), little in alcohol. Aqueous solutions have a blue color.

Sterilize at a temperature of +100 C for 30 minutes.

Apply externally as an antiseptic for burns, pyoderma, folliculitis, etc .; Use 1 - 3% alcohol solutions. With cystitis, urethritis, etc. The cavities are washed with aqueous solutions of 1: 5000 (0.02%).

Internally, previously prescribed methylene blue for cystitis, urethritis and other inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract - adults 0.1 g 3-4 times a day, children - at a rate of 0.005 - 0.01 g for each year of life in 3 to 4 doses.

Isolating with urine, the drug stains it blue, and therefore it is sometimes used to study the functional capacity of the kidneys, but more clear results are obtained with indigocarmine for this purpose (see).

Methylene blue has oxidation-reduction properties and can play the role of an acceptor and donor of hydrogen ions in the body; This is the basis for its use as an antidote for some poisoning.

Solutions of methylene blue are injected into the vein during poisoning with cyanides, carbon monoxide; Hydrogen sulfide: 50-100 ml of 1% aqueous solution of methylene blue or 1% solution of methylene blue in 25% glucose solution (chromosomal). The therapeutic effect of poisoning with hydrocyanic acid is based on the ability of methylene blue (in these doses) to transfer hemoglobin into methemoglobin, which binds to cyanides.

When methylene blue is injected into the vein in small doses (0.1-0.15 ml of 1% solution per 1 kg of body weight), methyhemoglobin is reduced to hemoglobin. This property of the drug is used in poisoning with methhemoglobin-forming poisons (nitrites, aniline and its derivatives, etc.).

Form release: powder; 1% aqueous solution, 1% alcohol solution; 1% solution of methylene blue in 25% glucose solution in ampoules of 20 and 50 ml.

Storage: powder - in a well-ukuporennoy packaging, protecting from the effects of light; Solutions - in the dark place.
