Alum (Alumen).

Potassium aluminum sulfate, potassium alum aluminum.

Synonym: Aluminii et Kalii sulfas.

Colourless, transparent crystals or white crystalline powder, weathered in the air. Soluble in water (1:10), are readily soluble in hot water and insoluble in alcohol. They contain 10.7% aluminum oxide.

The aqueous solution is acidic and sweet, astringent taste.

Apply externally as an astringent in aqueous solutions (0.5 1%) to rinse, wash, lotions, and douching with inflammatory diseases of the mucous membranes and skin. Assign also in the form of sticks for moxibustion with trachoma and as a styptic for cuts (shaving).

Pencil hemostatic (Stilus haemostaticus) - solid white rod contains potassium alum, aluminum-7, and 5 g of aluminum sulfate 2, 5 g, the air disappears. Soluble in water to form acidic solutions, astringent taste.

Applied to stop bleeding in small cuts after shaving.
