Description of the medicine: Cephedrin (Cephedrinum)

CEPHEDRINUM. 1-phenyl-2- [methyl- (b-cyanoethyl) -amino] -propanol-1-hydrochloride.

Synonym: Tsefhedrine

White crystalline powder. Soluble in water, little in alcohol.

By chemical structure is close to ephedrine (see).

The drug has antidepressant activity. On a number of pharmacological parameters (antagonism with reserpine, enhancement of the effects of sympathomimetic amines, etc.) is close to tricyclic antidepressants. MAO does not induce inhibition. Has a weak cholinolytic activity.

Timoleptic action is combined in tsefedrine with a stimulating effect, which is probably due to its proximity to the chemical structure of sympathomimetic amines.

Apply cefedrine mainly in depressive states, accompanied by motor and ideator inhibition.

Assign inside, starting with 25 mg 2 - 3 times a day, then gradually increase the dose to 200 - 300 mg (and in some cases up to 400-500 mg) per day. When the therapeutic effect is achieved, the dose is gradually reduced. In outpatient settings, with a mild depression, 50 to 75 mg per day (2 to 3 doses) are prescribed, for maintenance therapy 25 to 50 mg per day.

Higher doses for adults inside: single 0.2 g (200 mg), daily 0.5 g (500 mg).

Tsefedrine is usually well tolerated. In some cases, dry mouth, a tendency to constipation. With increased sensitivity to the drug may be observed excitation, sleep disturbance; In these cases, reduce the dose. The drug should not be prescribed before bedtime,

The drug is contraindicated in agitated conditions, renal and hepatic insufficiency, severe heart disease, during pregnancy.
