Description of the medicine: Neomycin sulfate (Neomycini sulfas)

NEOMICINE SULFATE (Neomycini sulfas).

Neomycin is a complex of antibiotics (neomycin A, neomycin B, neomycin C) formed during the life of the radiant fungus (actinomycete) Streptomyces fradiae or related microorganisms.

Synonyms: Colimycin, Mycerin, Soframycin, Framhicin, Actilin, Bykomycin, Enterfram, Framycetin, Myacine, Mycifradin, Neofracin, Neomin, Neomycinum, Nivemycin, Soframycine, etc. 0-2, 6-Diamino-2, 6-dideoxy-a D -glucopyranosyl- (1-> 4) -O [0-2, 6-diamino-2, 6-dideoxy-b-L-idopyranosyl- (1- 3) -b-D-ribofuranosyl (1- 5) 2-deoxy-D-streptamine (neomycin B).

Neomycin sulfate is a mixture of sulphates of neomycins.

White or yellowish white powder, almost odorless. Easily soluble in water, very little - in alcohol. Hygroscopic.

Theoretical activity of 680 units in 1 mg is practically released with activity of not less than 640 units per 1 mg; 1 ED corresponds to the activity of 1 μg of chemically pure neomycin B (base).

Neomycin has a broad spectrum of antibacterial action. Effective against a number of gram-positive (staphylococcus, pneumococcus, etc.) and gram-negative (E. coli, rod of dysentery, proteus, etc.) of microorganisms. With respect to streptococci inactive. On pathogenic fungi, viruses and anaerobic flora does not work. The resistance of microorganisms to neomycin develops slowly and to a small extent. The drug acts bactericidal.

With intramuscular injection, neomycin quickly enters the blood; The therapeutic concentration persists in the blood for 8-10 hours. When ingested, the drug is absorbed poorly and has only a local effect on the intestinal microflora.

Despite the high activity, neomycin currently has limited use, which is associated with its high nephro- and ototoxicity. With parenteral administration of the drug, kidney damage and damage to the auditory nerve can be observed up to complete deafness. A neuromuscular block can develop.

While ingesting neomycin usually does not have a toxic effect, however, if the excretory function of the kidneys is disturbed, its cumulation in the blood serum is possible, which increases the risk of side effects. In addition, if the integrity of the intestinal mucosa is compromised, with cirrhosis of the liver, uremia, the absorption of neomycin from the intestine may increase. Through intact skin, the drug is not absorbed.

Assign neomycin sulfate inwards for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract caused by sensitive microorganisms, including in enteritis caused by resistant to other antibiotic-microorganisms, before the operation on the digestive tract (for sanation of the intestine).

Locally used for purulent skin diseases (pyoderma, infected eczema, etc.), infected wounds, conjunctivitis, keratitis and other eye diseases, etc.

Neomycin is part of the ointments << Sinalar-H >> (see), << Lokakorten-N >> (see).

Inside appoint in the form of tablets or solutions.
