Short flexor of the thumb of the hand , m. Flexor poliicis brevis, lies internally from the previous muscle and also directly under the skin. It starts from the flexor retainer, bone-trapezium, trapezoid and cephalic bones and the base of the first metacarpal bone. Directing distally, the muscle bundles form two heads: a) the superficial head, caput superficiale, is attached to the external sesamoid bone, b) the deep head, caput profundum, is attached to both sesamoid bones of the metacarpal phalangeal joint of the thumb.
Function: flexes the proximal phalanx of the thumb.
Innervation: surface head - n. Medianus (CVI-CVII); Deep head - n. Ulnaris (CVIII-ThI).
Blood supply: r. Palmaris superficialis, a. Radialis, arcus palmaris profundus.
