Arytenoid cartilage , cartilago arytenoidea, paired, looks like an irregular triangular pyramid. Distinguish the base of the arytenoid cartilage, the base cartilaginis arytenoideae, bearing the ellipsoidal articular surface, facies articularis, articulating with the upper edge of the plate of the cricoid cartilage, and apex, the cartilaginis arytenoideae, directed upward, posteriorly and medially.

The posterior surface, facies posterior, is wide and concave anteriorly (in the vertical plane). The medial surface, facies medialis, insignificant in size, is directed toward the arytenoid cartilage of the opposite side. It delimits from below a triangular fovea, fovea triangularis. Below the crest there is an oblong fovea, fovea oblonga, - the place of attachment of the vocal muscle.

Of the three corners of the base of the arytenoid cartilage, two are most prominent: the posterolateral angle is the muscular process, processus muscularis, and the anterior angle is the vocal processus vocalis. Muscular process is the place of attachment of a number of muscles of the larynx; A vocal cords and a vocal muscle are attached to the vocal appendage.
