Muscles of the larynx

Muscles of the larynx , mm. Laryngis, cross-striped; They can be divided into two groups.

1. Muscles, whose function determines the movement of the entire larynx as a whole.

2. The own muscles of the larynx, which determine the movement of individual cartilages of the larynx.

The first group of muscles includes the superficial muscles of the neck (middle group), which, according to their position with respect to the hyoid bone, can be divided into supra-and sub-lingual. They change the position of the hyoid bone, and with it the larynx, since the latter is connected with the hyoid bone by means of the hypoglossal membrane.

The second group of muscles lying between the cartilages of the larynx defines two basic functions of the cartilage:

A) the function of the valve apparatus - a change in the position of the epiglottis in the act of swallowing and the act of breathing;

B) the function of the vocal apparatus is mainly the change in the position of the thyroid and arytenoid cartilages, which changes the ratio of the vocal cords tightened between them.
