Muscles lifting the ribs

Muscles lifting the ribs, mm. Levatores costarum, are present only in the thoracic spine. They are covered by m. Erector spinae and have the appearance of fan-shaped divergent muscle beams, starting from the transverse processes of the protruding vertebra and the eleven upper thoracic vertebrae. Going obliquely downward and laterally, the bundles diverge and attach to the corners of the underlying ribs. Often in the lower parts of the thoracic part of the spinal column there are muscle bundles that are thrown across one rib - these are the long muscles that lift the ribs, mm. Levatores costarum longi. In contrast, they release short muscles that raise the ribs, mm. Levatores costarum breves, going to the neighboring underlying ribs.
