Description of the medicine: Chloramphenicol stearate (Laevomycetini stearas)
LEVOMYCETINE STEARATE (Laevomycetini stearas).
D- (-) - threo - 1 - pair - Nitrophenyl - 2-dichloroacetylamino-propanediol-1, 33 - stearate.
White powder with a yellowish tint. It is practically insoluble in water, it is hardly soluble in alcohol. Contains bound 55% of chloramphenicol. The drug does not have a bitter taste inherent in chloramphenicol.
In the gastrointestinal tract, chloramphenicol stearate is saponified with the formation of chloramphenicol, which is the active substance. The concentration of chloramphenicol in the blood when taking chloramphenicol stearate increases more slowly than when taking chloramphenicol, and at the same dose remains at a lower level. The drug is not completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and therefore bacteriostatic concentration remains in the intestine for a long time.
It is used according to the same indications as chloramphenicol (dysentery, typhoid fever, whooping cough, tonsillitis, otitis media, pneumonia, rickettsiosis and other infectious diseases), mainly in pediatric practice, when the use of chloramphenicol is difficult due to the bitter taste.
Assign inside. Doses for children and adults are set based on the content of chloramphenicol in the preparation (0.55 g of chloramphenicol in 1 g of chloramphenicol stearate), i.e. doses of chloramphenicol stearate increase approximately 2 times compared with doses of chloramphenicol. Children under the age of 2 to 3 years are recommended to take the drug with porridge or milk formula; children can be prescribed a drug in the form of a 5% suspension
Chloramphenicol stearate is prescribed 3-4 times a day: for adults, usually 1 g per reception, children under 3 years old - 0.02 g / kg, from 3 to 8 years old - 0.3-0.4 g per reception, from 8 years and older - at 0.4 - 0.6 g per reception.
The duration of treatment is 10 days, and for diseases accompanied by relapses, up to 2 - 3 weeks.
Side effects are the same as in the treatment with chloramphenicol, with the exception of those that depend on the bitter taste of the drug.
Contraindications are the same as for chloramphenicol.
