Medication Description: Levomycetin Stearate (Laevomycetini stearas)
Levomitsetina Stearats (Laevomycetini stearas).
D- (-) - threo - 1 - pair - Nitrophenyl - 2-dichloroacetylamino-propanediol-1, 33 - stearate.
White with a yellowish sheen powder. Practically insoluble in water, difficult to dissolve in alcohol. Contains in bound form 55% of chloramphenicol. The drug does not have the bitter taste inherent in chloramphenicol.
In the gastrointestinal tract, levomycetin stearate is saponified to form levomycetin, which is the active substance. The concentration of chloramphenicol in the blood when taking chloramphenicol stearate increases more slowly than when taking chloramphenicol, and at the same dose remains at a lower level. The drug is not completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and therefore in the intestine for a long time remains bacteriostatic concentration.
Applied for the same indications as chloramphenicol (dysentery, typhoid fever, whooping cough, sore throat, otitis, pneumonia, rickettsiosis and other infectious diseases), mainly in children's practice, when the use of chloramphenicol is difficult because of the bitter taste.
Assign inside. Doses for children and adults are established on the basis of the content of levomycetin in the preparation (0.55 g of levomycetin in 1 g of levomycetin of stearate), i.e. doses of chloramphenicol stearate increase by about 2 times compared with doses of chloramphenicol. Children under the age of 2 to 3 years old are advised to take the drug with cereal or formula; children can be prescribed the drug in the form of a 5% suspension
Levomycetin stearate is prescribed 3-4 times a day: adults usually take 1 g per reception, children up to 3 years old - at 0.02 g / kg, from 3 to 8 years old - at 0.3-0.4 g per reception, from 8 years and older - 0.4 - 0.6 g per reception.
The duration of treatment is 10 days, and for diseases with relapses, up to 2 - 3 weeks.
Side effects are the same as in the treatment of chloramphenicol, with the exception of those that depend on the bitter taste of the drug.
Contraindications are the same as for chloramphenicol.
