Description of the medicine: Metacin (Methacinum)

METACINUM. 2-Dimethylaminoethyl benzylic acid ester of iodomethylate.

Synonym: Metacinum iodide.

White or white, with a slightly yellowish hue, crystalline powder. It is difficultly soluble in water (1: 200). Aqueous solutions (pH 4, 0 - 5, 0) are sterilized at + 100 ° C for 30 minutes.

Metacin is a very active m-cholinolytic agent. Being a quaternary ammonium compound, it penetrates poorly through the blood-brain barrier and is therefore selectively acting peripheral anticholinergic.

On the peripheral cholinergic receptors, methacin acts more strongly than atropine and spasmolytin. The effect on bronchial muscles is more active than atropine. Stronger suppresses the secretion of the salivary and bronchial glands. Relaxes the smooth muscles of the esophagus, stomach, intestines. At the same time, it has a much smaller mydriatic effect than atropine, which, apparently, is due to the fact that it hardly penetrates the hemato-ophthalmic barrier.

Metacin is used as a cholinolytic and antispasmodic agent for diseases accompanied by spasms of smooth muscle organs.

Metacin is very effective for peptic ulcer and chronic gastritis. It eliminates motor dysfunction of the stomach and duodenum, normalizes motor function; It is superior to atropine in the analgesic effect.

Metacin can be used in the complex therapy of patients with peptic ulcer in combination with other drugs.

Metacin is a very effective remedy for stopping renal and hepatic colic.

In anesthetic practice, they are used to reduce the salivation and secretion of the bronchial glands, as well as to reduce bronchiolospasm and circulatory disorders, which can occur as a result of anesthesia and irritation of the branches of the vagus nerve. In comparison with atropine, methacine is more convenient for use, since, having a smaller midrality effect, it makes it possible to follow the changes in the diameter of the pupil during the operation. For premedication, metacyne is also preferable because the increase in heart rate is less pronounced, and for bronchodilator action it is significantly superior to atropine.

Metacin can be used to relieve the increased excitability of the uterus with the threat of premature birth and late miscarriages, for premedication in cesarean section operations. The use of the drug reduces the amplitude, duration and frequency of uterine contractions.

Metacin is an effective means for lowering the tone and reducing the motor activity of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum during their radiological examination.

Metacin is used inside and parenterally (under the skin, in the muscles and in the vein). Inside, prescribe methacin (before meals) to 0.002 - 0.005 g (2 - 5 mg) 2 - 3 times a day. The course of treatment usually lasts 2 to 4 weeks. Under the skin, in the muscles and in the vein, inject 0.5 - 2 ml of a 0.1% solution.
