Abscesses of soft tissues after injection

Soft tissue afterburns occur when injected with infected contents or when injected into the subcutaneous tissue with drugs intended for intramuscular administration only. In the latter case, aseptic necrosis of the cellulose can occur, followed by purulent fusion of tissues, but the pus remains sterile.

Symptoms, course. A few days after the injection (usually A-6), there is a growing pain in the area of injection, fever, locally determined infiltration, painful on palpation, skin hyperemia, edema, after another 2-3 days there is a fluctuation. More often after-injection abscesses appear in the gluteal regions.

The diagnosis of an abscess is usually made after a diagnostic puncture with a thick needle.

Treatment. In the initial stage (before the development of purulent fusion) conservative treatment: UHF, anti-inflammatory drugs, in some cases, antibiotics. If an abscess occurs (early diagnosis with ultrasonic examination or diagnostic puncture of the infiltrate with a thick needle), it is opened.

The prognosis is favorable, it depends on the underlying disease, about which the injection was made. A prolonged delay in surgical treatment can lead to sepsis and massive puffiness in the cells of the cell spaces.

Prevention. Use of disposable syringes and needles, as a last resort, autoclaving of syringes and injection needles. It is not allowed to use clogged and cleaned mandrels needles. For intramuscular injections, needles intended for intradermal, subcutaneous and intravenous injections can not be used, since the thickness of the subcutaneous tissue in the gluteal region can sometimes reach 8-9 cm. Each time the injection side needs to be changed.
