Matthew 5

Previous chapter Index Next chapter
And seeing the multitudes, he went up on the mountain; and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.
And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
eleven Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute and otherwise unjustly speak evil of me.
Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they [and] the prophets who were before you.

You - salt of the earth. But if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted? She was thenceforth good for nothing, except to be thrown out at the destruction of the people.
You - the light of the world. It can not escape the city on a hill.
And when he hath lighted a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it gives light to all in the house.
So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.
Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whosoever shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

You have heard that it was said: You shall not kill, anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.
But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; and whosoever shall say to his brother, `cancer ', subject to the Sanhedrin; and who say, `mad ', subject to hell fire.
Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,
Leave there thy gift before the altar and go; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him to the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison;
Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt not come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

You have heard that it was said: Do not commit adultery.
But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
If thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee, for it is better for you to lose one of your members, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
thirty And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off and throw it away, for it is better for you to lose one of your members, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
It is also said that if someone divorces his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement.
But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Again you have heard that it was said not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths.
But I say to you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne;
nor by the earth, because it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King;
nor thy head not swear, because you can not not make one hair white or black.
But let your communication be yes, yes; no no; anything beyond this comes from evil.

You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
But I say unto you: Resist not evil. But whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also;
If anyone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak;
And whosoever shall compel thee to go with him one mile, go with him two.
Who asks you to give, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

You have heard that it was said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy.
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for those who persecute you,
you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? Does not the same tax collectors do?
And if you greet only your brothers, what do the big deal? Not as if the Gentiles?
Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father in heaven.
