ENCYCLOPEDIA OF FISH FAMILIES
Klinodryuchie, or Gasteropelecidae (Gasteropelecidae)
This family is not very rich in genera and species, but it is extremely interesting from the point of view of aquaristics. Three genera - the clinobranchs Thoracocharax, Gasteropelecus and Carnegiella ( Car negiella) - include eight species, the names of which are perfectly familiar to any experienced aquarist: T. securis and T. stellatus, S .. Marthae, S. myersi and C. Strigata, and also G. Levis , G. maculatus and G. sternicla.

The name of the clinobranch was not accidental: their body is characterized by a characteristic abdominal keel. In a straight line of the back, upper mouth and sitting too high on the head, you can guess that they live under a water mirror. Developed muscles allow them to protrude out of the water in pursuit of insects. Jumping out of the water with the help of their paddle-shaped pectoral fins, whistling them in the air, they leave behind several meters of water surface. Their native places stretch from Panama to the south of Brazil, and they inhabit mostly small tributaries of large and medium rivers. The low hanging abdominal part gives them a peculiar appearance, although in general the clinobranchia differ in appearance and in size. Trade offers many of them: they are small, reaching a length of only 2.5 cm - glass, or Dwarf carnegenels ( Carn e giella myersi), marble carnegiella (Carnegiella strigata) and platinum clinobranch (Thoracocharax securis), growing to 9 cm. It is better not to buy these fish for novice lovers. They need an aquarium that provides a large surface of a water mirror. For the maintenance of the clinobranchs, the aquarium must necessarily be provided with an upper lid: they can "fly" and fall out. The vegetation of your home pond can be moderately thick, but you need several plants with a long stem, which have leaves on the water surface. Under these leaves, the fish find shelter from the enemies that lie in wait for them in the air. Klinobrushnye love a softer and slightly acidic water with a temperature on the surface of 25-30 ° C. As hunters feed on insects near the water border of the clinobranch, as well as small crustaceans.
