Feldspars (silicates): Hyalophane
Diagnostic card.
On the picture. Two forms of crystals of hyalophane - a mineral highly valued by collectors for its transparency and purity.
(K, Ba) Al (Al, Si) Si 2 O 8
Singonia monoclinic
Hardness 6,5
Specific weight 2.6-2.9
Cleavage is perfect
Crack irregular
Color is colorless, differently colored
Color in powder white
Glitter glass
Crystals of hyalophane, colorless or white, occasionally completely transparent, with a typical glass shine. Their appearance is flattened-prismatic. Often there are clear traces of cleavage planes in the interior, oriented in two directions. In some cases, twinned crystals are observed. Like all feldspars, hyalofan has a moderate hardness.
Origin.
The hyalophane is a predominantly metamorphic mineral. It is formed among dolomites or limestones, processed by contact metamorphism. Sometimes it occurs in rocks of the gneiss type in association with manganese deposits.
Place of Birth.
It occurs on the manganese Caso mine in Japan, on Otetsonda in Namibia, Broken Hill in Australia. Small transparent crystals are found in the marble of Valle di Binn in Switzerland. In Italy, this mineral is present at the Tru de Roman mine, in Val Sapin (Aosta), in the form of small granules - in Candolia (province of Verbania).
Application in jewelry.
As for a transparent and colorless mineral, facial facings are preferred for the hyalophane, with a mostly rectangular facet. It best reveals the prismatic appearance of the crystal, and the treatment with a rotunda or diamond cut emphasizes the transparency of this gem.
