In nature, hydrozincite is found in the form of earthy and powdery crusts or in the form of dense masses, sometimes scaly or porous. Frequent concretion forms in the form of nipples and stalactite formations.
Sometimes you can find very small flat crystals. The color is snow-white, sometimes, as a result of surface changes, yellowish and pinkish gray.
Diagnostic signs.
Do not melt in the flame of a candle. In the flame, the Bunsen burner calcifies, releasing anhydrous carbonate and passing into zinc oxide.
Origin.
It occurs together with calamine and smithsonite within the zone of oxidation of zinc blende deposits. The latter passes into hydrozincite in the presence of water containing dissolved oxygen, iron sulfate and alkali metal carbonates.
Deposits and applications.
It occurs on the lead-zinc deposit of Kavedi-Predi (Reibl) in Karnia at the Grigna, Pianda-Barco and Argentin fields near Aronso (Belluno province); In the mining areas of Val Parina and Val del Risco (province of Bergamo) and in the Arenas field in Sardinia. Large deposits of this mineral are in Carinthia (Austria) and Spain. Obtained industrially as zinc ore.
