Native elements: Iron
Diagnostic card.
In the photo - a sample of meteorite iron, known as El Inca (Chile).
Fe
Cubic amount of cubic zirconia
Hardness 4,5-5
Specific weight 7,3-7,9
Cleavage cube
Cracked hook
Color gray steel
Color in powder gray
Glitter metal
Extremely rare mineral. Does not form well-formed crystals; Occurs in the form of small grains, painted in gray to whitish in color. Other forms are plates and minute aggregates inside other minerals.
Form of crystalline precipitates. Dense grains with irregular twisting outlines. The body-centered cubic lattice (for low-temperature modification).
Characterized by strong magnetic properties.

Diagnostic signs.
Strong paramagnetism, the ability to dissolve in acids, under very high humidity conditions, is very rapidly oxidized. A high oxidation capacity prevents the formation of a large volume of native iron.
Origin.
Native iron is rare. It is formed during the reduction of iron compounds in coal deposits. Meteoritic iron is more common. It is characterized by alloys with nickel and cobalt, and the ratios of these elements are variable. If the iron is more than 93%, the mineral is called kamasite.
Deposits and applications.
The most famous location is the island of Disco (Greenland). Of the others, one can call Buhl near Kassel (Hessen). As for meteoritic iron, it is found quite by accident. Native iron is almost never used. Iron in industry is extracted from ore.
