Card substitution (6 ways)

1. Direct substitution during the distribution of cards. Instead of the top card of the deck, the second card of the deck is pulled out, that is, the card is replaced during the distribution of cards. In order to do this, take a deck of cards in your left hand in the position, as shown in the photo below.

Direct card substitution

Next, with your right hand, cover the deck from above and with your right thumb, move the top card of the deck a little to the right side of yourself in order to allow the large right hand to move the second card from the top of the deck slightly forward from itself. After that, the index finger and the thumb of the right hand pick up the second card from the top of the deck and pull it forward until this card comes out of the pack.

2. Lateral substitution during the distribution of cards. The lateral substitution of the card differs from the direct one in that the second card, if counted from the top of the deck, must change places with the first card and go to the right side of the magician, that is, in the direction of the right hand. In this case, the side card substitution is performed with both hands. The initial position of the deck in the left hand is the same as in the direct substitution of the card. With your thumb of the left hand, move the top card away from you to the right side in such a way that it moves to half its width or slightly less. At the same time, together with the top card, the thumb of the left hand should move to the right side and the second card, but the distance is 2 times less than the first card, that is, about a quarter of the width of the map. The right hand at this time is free of cards and is waiting for the moment to execute a lateral substitution of the card. Then 4 fingers of the left hand that hold the deck from below are pulled out and begin to support not only the deck but also both cards that are pushed to the right with the thumb of the left hand. After that, the index, middle, ring finger and little finger are pressed from below on the cards extended so that the right side of the second card and the right side of the first card go up, and the left sides of these cards remain tightly pressed to the deck. This action prepares the deck for lateral substitution of the card. With the next movement, the right hand approaches the left hand. Then the big and index fingers of the right hand fall under the first card and, grabbing for the right side of the second card, quickly pull it out. The right hand should move away sharply from the left hand, the movement should be lightning fast.

3. Substitution of the card with the name "sandwich". Sometimes it is required to replace the second card from the top of the deck to the last card in the deck, after which this second card can be used in direct or side card substitution. You can recommend this method for this. Uncomplicated in performance. It is performed by the thumb and forefinger of the right hand. The initial position of the pack in the left hand is facing upwards. The right hand approaches the left hand, the index finger of the right hand is placed under the bottom of the deck, somewhere in the middle of the card. Then the right thumb is placed on the top card of the deck above the index finger of the right hand. Then the left hand moves its fingers and begins to hold the deck for long sides, the left hand thumb is on the left side, and the other fingers of the left hand are on the opposite side, as shown in the photo, which is lower.

After that, the right hand starts to pull one upper card and one lower card of the deck at the same time.

At this very moment, the thumb and index fingers of the left hand hold the middle of the deck, that is, the cards that are between the top and bottom card. When the right hand completely pulls out the top and bottom cards of the deck, it must separate from the pack a short distance and immediately approach it with the two cards that lie on top of each other. See the photos below.

Approaching, the right hand throws up the two cards on top of the deck and again moves away from the deck to allow the left hand to correct the entire deck of cards, which is in its palm. Substitution is complete. Now the bottom card has taken the second place on top of the deck and can be used for direct or lateral substitution.

4. Substitution during the coup. The meaning of this method is that the card you put on the table is changed to the bottom card of the deck. The substitution of the card occurs at the moment when the hand that holds the deck turns the card that lies on the table face up or down. In other words: You hold the pack in your left hand, then turn it with your fingers face down and at that moment make a substitution of the card.

How is the substitution made? Take the pack in the left hand face down. Nail phalanx of the ring finger stick the bottom card of the deck on the cranium, and the nail phalanxes of the middle finger and little finger on the obverse of the bottom card, as indicated in the photo.

The bottom card of the deck is tightly held by these three fingers and if you straighten your fingers, the card will be turned upside down. Successful card substitution is possible only if the deck is in the right hand. The index finger should protrude and cover the outer narrow edge. The thumb does not carry any useful load, that is, does not play any role in holding the deck - this is the task of the other fingers.

Put the card you want to replace face down on the table. Place your left hand on this map and place the tip of your thumb on its right side 12 mm from the front narrow edge. At the same time, point the tip of the index finger under the left long side of the map and slightly lift up, as shown in the photo.

Then remove the thumb from the card and move it to the vertical position (the card will stand on the long edge), in it, hold it with your index finger and thumb. Then move your hand a little to the right side, so that the card falls down. This moment will be the moment when the card is changed. Press the thumb of the right hand on the card you are turning over and straighten the ring finger so that the card lying on the front side of the deck is placed on the table. At the same time, with your thumb, press up and the card that was previously lying on the table, press to the deck, as shown in the photo.

All this happens when the left hand moves naturally to the right side at the moment of card flipping. An unnamed finger when pulling the card down from the deck helps it to occupy the auxiliary position when it is supported by the long side of the table top.

All the substitution of the map should be fairly smooth. From the outside, everything should look as if you just turned the map over.

5. Substitution by shooting. This method of substitution is needed when you need to replace the lower (front) card of the withdrawn card package. To do this, take the deck and start shuffling it, ask any viewer to stop you. As soon as the viewer says "stop", then in this place, divide the deck into two parts and ask the viewer to remember the lower card of the upper package. Then transfer this card to the deck.

The deck, where the bottom card is the selected card, lie across the fingers of the left hand. Then look at the deck as if you wanted to determine the position of the selected card (the viewer believes that the card is in the middle of the deck), and remove the deck with the thumb of the left hand. This "false" card is now becoming the map that the viewer chose, for which the real map is unnoticeably transferred from underneath the bottom of the deck to the bottom (on the front side) of the shot packet, where it will cover the map seen before. All this should happen during the rotation of the hand so that the lower half of the deck falls on the table. At the same time, remove the top half of the deck from the viewers, as shown in the photo. The executed action allows you to move the selected real card to the front side of the previously shown "false" card.

Turn the hand and hold the bottom card, pressing it with the fingers of the left hand, the lower half of the deck falls on the table. If at the moment you turn the top part of the deck face to the viewer, then the viewer will see that the map shown earlier turned into the selected one.

This method can also be used to force a card. For example, take the deck face up in the left hand and make the cards fall under the influence of the thumb on the other fingers of the left hand until the spectator stops you. After that, transfer the top card from the side of the card (the card being forced) to the cardinal side of the package that is in the hand, when you make the rest of the cards fall on the table.

6. Substitution of Chris Van Bern. Take the pack in the left hand, with one long side of the deck hold the thumb, and on the other hand, sweep your fingers from the index finger to the little finger. Hold the palm of your right hand with tightly compressed fingers on top of the deck, as shown in the photo.

Then, with your left index finger, squeeze the back card from the deck into the palm of your right hand.

The card is held in the palm of the right hand with the index finger of the left hand.

Then the left hand rotates in the wrist in such a way that the deck appears under the right hand.

After this, the deck comes back, already with a card on the face from the palm of the right hand.

And on the face of the deck is already a completely different map.

The right hand should be in the card replacement position naturally. It is also necessary that the card occupy a position behind the right hand in the classical palmation position. This will cause the fingers of the right hand to bend slightly while moving.
