Making Bowstrings

A bowstring is best done from several threads, and not from one lace. For the bowstring, yarns made of strong man-made fibers, such as Kevlar (very strong, but also expensive), kapron, lavsan, and silk will do the best. A nice bowstring is obtained from a thin fishing cord in reels (not fishing lines, namely cord, I advise you to look into "Robinson"). The main thing is that the thread does not stretch and is very strong and resistant to rubbing. The thickness of the filaments does not matter much, just depending on this, the number of turns will change.

The string is made as follows:

Step 1. To begin with, it is necessary to make a "winding machine", that is, a simple device with two or four pins, where the string will be wound. L3 (length of the string) = L1 + L2, with L1 = 15-20 cm.

But there is an easier way out - to wind the thread on the legs of the stool. Different variants of winding can be achieved almost any length, although it may be a little inaccurate. The ends of the filament are connected by an Achilles knot.

Step 2. On the bow sticks, that is, in the place where it is put on the bow, it is necessary to make a protective winding. This will prevent abrasion. For this, the option with four pins is convenient. Well, in other cases, you can use a spacer. It is necessary to reel up tight, lay the coils as tightly as possible arcs to a friend.

The winding is made from both ends of the string, about 15 cm. On the one hand, the turns begin to hide the knot resulting from Step 1.

Step 3. Now make a loop-eye, tightly rewinding its base.

Step 4. Next, approximately in the middle of the string, you should also make a winding 10-15 cm long. This is the place where your fingers will lie. It is also useful to make a "saddle" - a thickening under the shank of the arrow, so that it does not move.

All. The bowstring is ready. I recommend to make a couple more spare. So, just in case. Store them in a dry place. And try not to bow for a long time with a stretched string.

Making arrows for the bow.

Let's start with the manufacture of the shaft. A shaft for an arrow can be made of wood, this is the easiest. You can go to the woods and cut down the tree, cut the boards, etc. You can buy a board and cut an arrow. You can use ready-made wooden slats of a square section or even a regular bead, processing them to a circular cross-section with a diameter of 8-9 mm. The main thing is to choose the rails as straight as possible and without knots (and zadorok). Now I need to make the sticks round, I did the plane. Next, the workpiece should be sanded, first a large, and then a small sandpaper. To do this, you can use a drill at low speed, clamping the workpiece in its chuck. Pay attention to the fact that the more smooth the shaft of the arrow will be, the more accurate will be its flight. Better yet, if you can find ready-made round bars. Now I need a tip. It can be done simply: hammer a nail and wrap that place with copper wire. But this design is not very. But I advise you to do this kind of tip:

It can be cut from steel thickness of 1.5 - 2 mm. It will not be bad to cut it out of a knife. At the butt end of the bow, a slit should be made, and there to fix the tip on the glue, then wrap it with a thread.

Then you need to make a feather. It can be made from bird feathers. One bird feather can cut two three plumage (depending on its length). The length of the feathers is in the range from 5.0 to 9.0 cm. The best feathers for the arrow are turkeys.

The feather is cut with scissors along the trunk, and then pieces of a given size are cut from it. For feathering, the best part of the feather should be used, closer to the base of the trunk. Feathers before gluing can be painted in the right colors.

Scissor-cut plumage has an uneven trunk, which must be treated so that it can be glued to the boom. The processing of the trunk of feathering is performed either on an emery wheel (with its rotation), grinding the core of the trunk, or by grinding sandpaper. The latter method is easier and more secure against errors. Grinding is done as follows: the feathering is compressed between two metal plates about 0.5-0.7 mm thick. The remaining part of the trunk of the pen is sanded on the emery cloth, which is on a flat board. Since the plates are held perpendicular to the board, after grinding the butt end will be pressed against the boom evenly. Also, grinding of the lateral faces of the feathering rod is performed.

The feathers so produced are glued to the boom. Selection and sticking of the plumage on one set of arrows must be made from the feathers of the eponymous wing.

Incorrectly attached plumage (for example, taken from different wings) can lead to differences in the flight of the boom compared to other arrows.

The plumage attached to the arrows is fired with a red-hot wire to give them a certain shape, for which special machines are used.

Currently arrows from the bow use plumage, purchased from various companies, which are qualitatively manufactured for any arrows and various types of shooting.

You can put feathers on strong threads (silk, capron, etc.)
