Making an improvised sandblasting machine.

I bring to your attention the design of a portable sandblaster for decorative work, modding and other needs. He certainly is not without some drawbacks, which, however, is blocked by the fact that it becomes possible at home to do quite professional things. The device allows you to apply sandblasting on glass and other materials and remove the old paint. The device operates from a small compressor that can be purchased for 3,500 rubles. (Fig. 1). As a sand, the usual building sand is used, it only needs to be sifted through a fine sieve. You can buy ready-sieved sand. Work should be done in a separate room or outdoors.

When working, care should be taken to protect the eyes and exposed areas of the body in the same way that ricochet of grains of sand can damage the eyes and penetrate the skin. And dust does not promote health.

compressor

So, the appearance of the homemade sandblaster is presented in the figures.

sandblasting machine

As can be seen from the figure, the device is made of a plastic bottle, a water ball valve, a tee and a valve from a spray gun. Some parts must be turned on the lathe. The insert is an injector, at the point of convergence of the conical holes a low pressure region is formed and the air that has got into the bottle along the hose rushes there, grabbing grains of sand. The crane controls the consumption of sand.

Self-made sandblaster

A plug from the same bottle is screwed to the mixer with a threaded washer. The attempt to make a similar stopper from steel was not crowned with success. So you have to put up with the need to replace the worn out plugs. The only detail that had to be purchased is a ceramic nozzle from a dental sandblasting machine. It costs about 150 rubles and is sold in medical stores.

Initially, I made a nozzle made of steel with a hole of 2.5 millimeters, but after fifteen minutes of work, the hole became about five millimeters and the performance fell dramatically due to the reduction in flow velocity. Dimensions in general are not critical, anyone who wants to repeat can himself calculate everything, the main thing is to understand the principle.

The principle of the homemade sandblasting apparatus is well understood by the figure. After pulling the trigger, air enters the gun channel, creates excess pressure in the bottle and enters the homemade liner, where it mixes with the sand-air mixture coming from the bottle through the control valve. Further, the sand-air mixture under pressure exits through the ceramic nozzle .., this is exactly how sandblasting machines work.

Sandblasting design

And here is an example of engraving on glass. Glue the glass with a self-adhesive film, on which to draw a picture and cut it out along the contour.

Imaging on glass

After that, treat with a jet of sand (photographed the process did not dare because of the scattering of grains of sand and the real possibility of spoiling the camera), after removing the film.

Glass engraving

The engraved pattern is well backlit with LEDs. The drawing is much sharper than engraving with a dremel. Passing through sand several times you can brew the depth of engraving. It is possible to cut holes in the glass. To do this, it is necessary to drill a hole in a steel plate with a thickness of two millimeters and drill a hole in the right place with a hole in the right place in circular motions along the entire area of the hole. This takes about three four minutes and a bottle of sand. The edges of the holes are very clean, without chips and cracks. Perhaps the cutting of square holes.

Animated illumination

A drawback of the design is the need to constantly fill the sand in the bottle, but after all, the device is not designed for industrial production. When working indoors (NOT IN THE APARTMENT, then the sand will never be raked out!) Sand can be collected, sifted and used again.

Using a sandblaster, you can make really terrific things.
