The least staircase , m. Scalenus minimus, unstable, lies somewhat inward from m. Scalenus anterior. It starts from the transverse process III of the cervical vertebra and is attached to the inner edge of the first rib in front of the tuberculum m. Scaleni anterioris and to the dome of the pleura.

Innervation: nn. Cervicales (C5-C7).
