Jaw-hyoid muscle

Maxillofacial muscle , m. Mylohyoideus, flat, irregularly triangular in shape. It starts from the jaw-hyoid line of the lower jaw. Bunches of muscle are directed from the top down and a little behind in front and on the middle line meet with bunches of the same muscle of the opposite side, forming a seam of the maxillofacial muscle.


The posterior fascicles of the muscle are attached to the front surface of the body of the hyoid bone. Both maxillofacial muscles participate in the formation of the bottom of the oral cavity and are called the diaphragm of the mouth.


Function: with a strengthened lower jaw, the muscle pulls the hyoid bone up and anteriorly; With a strengthened hyoid bone involved in lowering the lower jaw.

Innervation: n. Mylohyoideus (n. Trigeminus).

Blood supply: aa. Sublingualis, submentalis.
