PROMEDOL (Promedolum). 1, 2, 5-Trimethyl-4-propionyloxy-4-phenylpiperidine hydrochloride.

Promedol is a synthetic derivative of phenyl piperidine and can be considered in terms of chemical structure as an analogue of the phenyl-N-methylpiperidine moiety of the morphine molecule.

Promedol has a strong analgesic activity. It is quickly absorbed and acts as if taken orally, and with parenteral administration.

According to the effect on the central nervous system promedol is close to morphine; It reduces the perception of the CNS painful impulses, oppresses conditioned reflexes. Like other analgesics, it lowers the CNS's total ability, enhances the anesthetic effect of novocaine and other local anesthetics. Has a hypnotic effect (mainly in connection with the removal of the pain syndrome). Compared with morphine less depresses the respiratory center, less excites the center of the vagus nerve and vomiting center. 0 shows a moderate spasmolytic effect on the smooth muscles of the internal organs and at the same time increases the tone and strengthens the contractions of the muscles of the uterus.
