Refers to noncardioselective - b adrenoblockers. "Internal" sympathomimetic activity does not possess. By action and indications for use close to anaprilinu.

Like other b-adrenoblockers used to treat diseases of the cardiovascular system. It is widely used as an agent for the treatment of glaucoma '. For this purpose, it is available in the form of eye drops (0.25% and 0.5% solutions of the timolol maleate) under the names Timolol, Timoptik, Timotol, Optimum, Arutimol, Glukomol, Okupres "," Oftenosin "(Timolol, Timortic, Timoroth, Ortimol, Arutimol, Glucomol, Osupres, Orhtenosin, etc.).

When instilling one drop of solution into the conjunctival sac, the intraocular pressure usually decreases.

The effect is observed at normal initial and especially at the raised ophthalmotonus. The action usually occurs 20 minutes after instillation, reaches a maximum after 1 to 2 hours and lasts about 24 hours.

The effect of the drug is mainly associated with a decrease in the secretion of aqueous humor, although some increase in outflow is not excluded. The size of the pupil does not affect the size of the pupil.

Prescribe the drug to patients with chronic open-angle glaucoma, and in some cases - secondary glaucoma.

Bury one drop of 0.25% or 0.5% solution 2 times a day. Sometimes, a one-time instillation is sufficient. With prolonged use of timolol, weakening of the effect (tachyphylaxis) is possible.

If necessary, you can combine timolol with miotics (pilocarpine), adrenomimetics and inhibitors of carbonic anhydrase (see Diacarb). In this case, a more pronounced and prolonged effect on intraocular pressure can be achieved.

There are indications that the hypotensive effect of timolol in glaucoma is enhanced when combined with eye drops of taufon (see Taufon).

When using timolol, it should be borne in mind that it is absorbed from the conjunctival sac and can cause characteristic of the b-adrenoblocker common resorptive phenomena, and therefore it must be administered with caution to the patient prone to bronchial spasm and suffering from heart failure. Local irritant effect is not observed. In some patients, a slight slowing of the pulse is possible. In rare cases, there is an increased sensitivity to the drug.

Do not prescribe the drug to children and pregnant women.
