Astigmatism

Astigmatism is the combination in one eye of various types of ametropia or different degrees of one type of ametropia.

Etiology, pathogenesis. Anomaly of the structure of the eyes - the radius of curvature of the cornea (rarely the lens) in different meridians is affected by the unequal. On the two main mutually perpendicular meridians, the strongest and weakest refractive power. As a result, images of objects on the retina are always fuzzy, distorted. Sometimes astigmatism develops after surgery, corneal disease, and eye injuries. Distinguish its following types: simple astigmatism - in one of the main meridians of emmetropia, in the other - myopia or hypermetropia; Complex astigmatism - in both main meridians there is an ametropia of the same species, but of varying degrees; Mixed astigmatism - in one of the main meridians there is myopia, in the other - hypermetropia.

Symptoms: decreased vision, sometimes vision of objects curved, rapid eye fatigue during work, headache. The study notes the difference in the refractive power of the eye in different meridians. The diagnosis is based on the definition of refraction in the main refracting meridians.

Treatment. Constant wearing of glasses with astigmatic lenses.

Forecast. With correct correction, high visual acuity and good operability remain.
