At present, there are a significant number of substations in power systems, with relay protection and automation devices performed on obsolete electromechanical relay equipment.

This equipment is physically worn out, its characteristics considerably lag behind modern requirements for accuracy, power consumption, the ability to work in extreme emergency conditions.

Firm "Energomashvyn" developed and produced a set of equipment on a microelectronic and microprocessor base, allowing without great expense to upgrade the substations with the transfer of funds RZA to a modern base.

Schemes for connecting equipment to modern switches as well as circuit breakers of early issues have been developed. Firm "Energomashvin" can carry out the project of reconstruction of relay protection and automation devices, selection of settings, installation of cabinets of relay protection and automation devices, adjustment of equipment. At the same time, the materials presented by the company can help the customer to perform the specified works independently. Of course, the proposed equipment and recommendations can be used in the design of new facilities.

A significant number of foreign and Ukrainian firms offer a new, microprocessor-based relay protection equipment that meets modern requirements and can be used to upgrade the RZA equipment of existing electrical equipment, as well as for new facilities.

In Ukraine, technical literature on relay protection and electroautomatics has not been produced for many years, and the old literature is somewhat obsolete in terms of some new requirements, and is simply not available on the market. The proposed book, mainly using the already accumulated experience of performing protection on electromechanical relays, at the same time includes modern requirements to relay protection that can be implemented on modern microelectronic and microprocessor equipment.

The book is an attempt of the firm "Energomashvin" to generalize and old data in the part in which they were preserved in modern conditions, but also modern requirements for the construction of protection and equipment of relay protection and automation devices. The principles of performing protection are often outlined on the basis of circuits on electromechanical relays, since in this case it is easier to understand the principle of the implementation of relay protection devices and the requirements imposed on them. And on the basis of this move to the study of the same functions on the modern microelectronic and microprocessor base. The book was widely used as a previously published literature, as well as books by modern authors, as well as technical information of manufacturers of modern microelectronic and microprocessor equipment.

This edition of the book is intended for a wide range of relay specialists, including beginners, who are faced with the task of completely or partially upgrading existing or introducing new equipment and selecting the equipment most suitable for use under current conditions. They need both general technical information on the implementation of relay protection, as well as specific information to the equipment, methods of setting and setting protection.

For the purpose of more diverse information on the modern equipment available on the market, as well as often missing data on electromechanical protections and primary equipment, an application has been added to the book, which contains the necessary and available information. In addition, the disc includes detailed information of foreign companies, such as ALSTOM, GE, ABB, Siemens, Merlin Gerin and others about their equipment.
