Botox injections with sweating

In 2004, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of hyperhidrosis (axillary hyperhidrosis) with Botox (Botulinum toxin type A). The birthday of this treatment in the United States is July 19, 2004. Interestingly, in Europe and other countries this method began to be used 10 years earlier, but in the USA, where the responsibility for the safety of the treatment is especially high, the treatment of sweating with botox was allowed only after waiting for 10 summer results and hundreds of thousands of treated patients. Approval of this commission implies that the patient who has not received relief from the use of antiperspirants , has the right to use Botox for medical reasons (this in the US implies the possibility of insurance coverage for selected categories). Botox is produced by Allergan, Inc., Irvine, California and is the most studied botulinum toxin in the world. Prior to approval as a drug for the treatment of sweating, the drug was used in millions of people for the treatment of various pathological conditions including spastic conditions and motor disorders. Although the drug is manufactured in the US, more than 20 countries, including Russia, have recognized this drug for sweating more than once. In Russia, the first seminars on teaching the technique of treating hyperhidrosis with the help of Botox injections began to be carried out already in 2000.

Botulinum toxin is a natural, purified protein that has the ability to temporarily block the secretion of acetylcholine in the nerve endings, a substance responsible for "activating" the activity of the sweat glands. Blocking, or interrupting the development of this chemical messenger, Botox "turns off" sweating in the area where the drug was administered.

The use of botox (disporta) for the treatment of sweating of the armpits can be effective only in the hands of a trained and experienced physician who has experience in using this method of treatment.

The introduction of Botox is done on an outpatient basis, requires little time, does not require any restrictions in work and rest (except for refusing heavy physical exercises and visiting the sauna on the day of injection).

The experience of our center indicates the desirability of restrictions physical exertion, thermal procedures and alcohol intake for 2 weeks after injections.

During the procedure, the thinnest needles are used, through which the minimum amount of the drug is injected intradermally (subcutaneously), into the area of the sweat glands responsible for increased sweating. A lot of injections are made in accordance with the assessment made by the doctor who makes the treatment. Injections in the palms and feet can be quite painful. To ease discomfort, the doctor uses one of the methods of anesthesia - anesthetic cream, blockade, cooling and vibration.

It is possible that during the injections part of the sweat glands will be unreached treatment, and the hyperhidrosis site will remain. If this happens, it is possible to consult an additional doctor and conduct corrective treatment.

Botox does not cure hyperhidrosis and after completion of the drug the symptoms of excessive sweating may return. Repeated injections are needed to maintain dryness. These repeated injections can be performed at intervals ranging from 7 to 16 months, depending on the individual patient data.
