LEVITERING TOY - "LEVITRON"

Fig.1 Levitron in action |
The company Polymagnet CJSC (AMT & C Group) represents a levitron - a small top, capable of "hovering" in the air during the rotation. The levitron action is based on three basic physical laws: the law of universal gravitation, the law of interaction of magnetic fields and the second law of Newton. Levitron is a small magnetic top, which is untwisted and rotates over a special magnetic box. From the point of view of classical physics, it is impossible to achieve the stability of two repulsive magnets, one of which is floating above the other. Specialists from Fascinations explain that they managed to find an exception to the rules. More precisely, it was discovered by inventor Roy M. Harrigan (Roy M. Harrigan) and patented in May 1983. |
As you guessed, the rotation keeps the top magnet from tipping over. But what prevents him to slide sideways and fly off the magnetic cushion? The lower magnet, and its field, respectively, has a complex shape. And with the deviation of the top from the center, there is a force that pushes it back to the point of equilibrium. This power is very small and therefore the launch of "Levitron" will require training. The equilibrium in this system is so subtle that it is influenced by the temperature in the room or even by small fluctuations in terrestrial magnetism. The set of toys includes a set of 5 weights - weight from 3 to 0.1 grams. Their combination achieves equilibrium. |
Fig.2 Homemade Levitron |
The system of magnets is located in this box in such a way that the magnetic field created by it maintains the top on the weight, not allowing it to deviate away from the center of the box at the same time. Since the rotating Levitron does not touch the surfaces and, therefore, is almost not subject to frictional forces, it can soar in the air long enough.
A bright top with unusual properties can become either a toy for children depending on your desire, or a visual demonstration of physical laws, or simply pleasant fun. To see what the Levitron looks like in action, you can download it here .
