UPD: 01/26/2015 Ukraine does not have NATO troops. The international forces that are present on Ukrainian soil are Russian, - Stoltenberg
A statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin that the Ukrainian army is a "NATO legion" is nonsense.
This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during a press conference in Brussels following an emergency meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Commission, reports Censor.NET with reference to Ukrainian truth.
"This is nonsense. There is no NATO legion in Ukraine. The international forces that are present on Ukrainian soil are Russian," he said.
According to him, Russia also continues to support the separatists with weapons. “We are talking about heavy weapons of many kinds,” Stoltenberg emphasized.
As the Secretary General noted, in recent weeks, Russia has transferred hundreds of pieces of modern equipment to the separatists in eastern Ukraine, including missile systems, heavy artillery, tanks and armored vehicles. "We urge Russia to stop supporting the separatists, immediately stop destabilizing Ukraine and respect its international obligations," he stressed.
"We urge all parties to continue their efforts to achieve a peaceful solution in full compliance with the Minsk agreements," Stoltenberg added. According to him, NATO provides Ukraine with "practical and political support" and believes that there can be no military solution to the conflict.
UPD: 01/26/2015 Putin: The Armed Forces of Ukraine are a foreign NATO legion. VIDEO
According to Putin, the APU cannot be called an army.
It is reported by Censor.NET with reference to TASS.
"We often say: the Ukrainian army, the Ukrainian army. In fact, who is fighting there? There are indeed partly official units of the armed forces, but to a large extent these are the so-called" voluntary nationalist battalions, "Putin said.
"This is no longer an army, it is a foreign legion, in this case a foreign NATO legion, which, of course, does not pursue the goals of the national interests of Ukraine," Putin said, speaking to students of Gorny University in St. Petersburg.
“There are completely different goals, and they are associated with the achievement of the geopolitical goals of containing Russia, which absolutely does not coincide with the national interests of the Ukrainian people,” he said.
UPD: 01/26/2015 Putin called the Russian invasion of Ukraine a civil war: Thousands of people have already died. VIDEO
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that official Kiev refuses to follow the path of a peaceful settlement of the conflict in the Donbass and used a peaceful respite to regroup forces.
"Unfortunately, the official Kiev authorities refuse to follow the path of a peaceful settlement, they do not want to decide by political means. First, law enforcement agencies used it, then the security service, then the army," Putin said during a conversation with students of the Gorny National Mineral Resources University in St. Petersburg, reports TASS.
The head of state noted that when resistance was offered, official Kiev ceased hostilities. "And they used, unfortunately, a peaceful respite exclusively for regrouping, and started again. Thousands of people have already died. This, of course, is a real tragedy," the president said.
According to him, "tragic events, in fact, a civil war" are taking place in Ukraine. "And in Ukraine, in my opinion, many already understand this very well," Putin said.
