Antivirus market research results
The American IT company OPSWAT has published the results of antivirus market research, instant messaging clients (IM clients), and operating systems for the second quarter of this year.
OPSWAT claims that the data it collects can be considered globally representative, since it came from its own utilities, which are used in business as well as home users around the world. During the installation of the OPSWAT software, a special report is generated by the user, which is then sent to the company's servers. In this way, 43,000 unique records sent by computer users from all over the world were collected and processed.
The collected data displays statistics on the use of antivirus software, instant messaging programs, and Windows operating systems for the period from March 23 to May 15, 2011.

Antivirus Software Manufacturers (Global Statistics)
AVAST Software and AVG Technologies share the first place in the rating of manufacturers of protective equipment with indicators of 12.37% each. At the same time, AVAST lost 3.82% of the market compared to the previous quarter. The third and fourth places are occupied by Avira and Microsoft with indicators of 12.29% and 11.24%, respectively.
Microsoft raised its rating by about 4% compared to last quarter. Most likely such a sharp jump was made possible thanks to the spread of Microsoft Security Essentials through the Windows Update service, as well as the tight integration of this antivirus software with other services of Windows operating systems. Do not forget that MSE is completely free for owners of licensed operating systems Microsoft. The fifth line of the rating is occupied by ESET with an almost unchanged result of 9.98% of the market for anti-malware products.
Antivirus Software Manufacturers (North America)
The "hit parade" of antivirus software vendors in the North American market is slightly different from the global market.
The first place was taken by Microsoft with a market share of 17.07%. Over the past quarter, this newcomer in the market for protective software managed to increase its share by an impressive ~ 7%, thus furnishing Symantec, the leader of the previous quarter, which is now at the third rung with an indicator of 14.47%. The second place belongs to AVG with an indicator of 15.63%.
Use of antivirus software
In the global market for antivirus products, data from 62 manufacturers of security software were collected and analyzed. The top five manufacturing companies control 58.25% of antivirus products worldwide. In the North American market, the figures are slightly different: among the 51 antivirus software vendors, the top five control 62.80% of antiviruses.
Free antivirus software products are at the top of the rankings, both on the global market and on the North American market. They can also be seen in the top places of the antivirus vendor rating in both markets. The three most popular antivirus products in the global and North American markets are also correlated with the high rating of their manufacturers.

Windows operating systems market
According to the latest data from the report presented, Windows 7 continues to conquer American users: in the last quarter, this operating system managed to increase its market share by 7% among North Americans. The market share of Windows Vista has plummeted in the last quarter: previously it was installed on 20.31% of computers in North America, and as of the end of spring only 6.62% of PC owners used it. Curiously enough, in the last quarter Windows XP managed to increase its rating by more than 6%, and now the share of this OS is more than 50% in the North American market.
As for the global computer market, here Windows XP also improved its results, although not so significantly. Immediately after the ten-year “legend”, Windows 7 is located, which also showed a good positive growth in the number of users in the global operating system market. Windows Vista closes the top three with the least comforting result: only 4.72% of PC owners still use this OS, and their number continues to decrease.
Instant messaging client market (IM clients)
To study this market in addition to the method described at the beginning of the article, the method of sampling from search engine registries was also used. This provided a more accurate picture of the use of popular instant messaging clients.
No matter how strange the statistics would be to a Russian-speaking Internet user, globally, the market for IM clients differs significantly from that used by most Russian-speaking users of the Global Network.
So, the first place in the global market for IM clients by a wide margin from its closest competitors is occupied by Windows Live Messenger with a market share of 40.67%. The second place is strongly retained by the recent acquisition of Redmond - Skype, which has 27.39% of users. Closes the top three Yahoo! Messenger with 15.11% of users. The Google Talk and ICQ clients we use can boast only 3.56% and 2.01% of users, respectively.
In addition to the statistics collected on the use of IM clients, OPSWAT also collected statistics that show whether the IM client installed on the computer is running during the statistics collection. Interestingly, among North American and European users of IM clients, 32.65% of users had at least one of the installed IM clients running.
Studies show that the top three IM rating clients control over 80% of this market. This figure does not include the proportion of "web messengers", such as Google or Facebook web chat, which can be used by a much larger number of computer users, compared to using IM clients.
