Spade-and-hyoid muscle

Palp and hyoid muscle , m. Omohyoideus, long, flattened, has two abdomen-upper and lower, which are connected approximately at the middle of the length of the muscle by a tendon jumper.

Upper abdomen, venter superior, starts from the lower edge of the body of the hyoid bone, outside of the attachment of m. Sternohyoidei, and is directed down along the outer edge of this muscle. Then bends backwards, lies behind m. Sternocleidomastoidei, where it passes into the tendon jumper. The latter fuses with the fascial vagina of the neurovascular bundle of the neck.

The lower abdomen, venter inferior, starts from the tendon jumper, exits from the outer edge of the m. Sternocleidomastoidei, is directed back and slightly downward and reaches the scapula of the scapula where it is attached to the upper edge of the scapula and lig. Transversum scapulae superius.

Function: with a strengthened scapula pulls the hyoid bone down and out, and also pulls the vagina of the neurovascular bundle of the neck, while widening the lumen of the internal jugular vein, v. Jugularis internae.

Innervation: radix superior ansae cervicalis (CI-CIII).

Blood supply: all the muscles lying below the hyoid bone are supplied with blood from aa. Thyroidea inferior, cervicalis superficialis.
