Short fibular muscle

Short fibular muscle , m. Peroneus brevis (m. Fibularis brevis), long, thin, located directly on the outer surface of the fibula under m. Peroneus longus. The muscle originates from the lower half of the lateral surface of the fibula and from the intermuscular septum of the lower leg, it goes down and then goes alongside the tendon of the long fibular muscle. Rounding the lateral ankle, the tendon is forwarded along the outside of the calcaneus and attached to the tuberosity V of the metatarsal bone.


Function: bends the foot , withdraws and lifts its lateral edge.

Innervation: n. Peroneus superficialis [(LIV) LV; SI].

Blood supply: aa. Peronea, tibialis anterior.

The tendons of both peroneal muscles, passing behind the lateral ankle, are enclosed in the common synovial vagina of the peroneus muscles, vagina synovialis mm. Rhoreorum (fibularium) communis. In the lower, distal, divisions this vagina is bifurcated and each tendon is enclosed in its own vagina.
