Muscles narrowing the vocal cavity
1. Lateral cricoid muscle , m. Cricoarytenoideus lateralis, begins from the lateral surface of the cricoid cartilage, and, moving obliquely upward and posteriorly, is attached to the muscular process of the arytenoid cartilage . The muscle pulls the arytenoid cartilage to the side, as a result of which the vocal appendages of the arytenoid cartilages, and hence the vocal cords attached to them, converge and the size of the glottis diminishes.
2. Transverse anteroid muscle , m. Arytenoideus transversus, an unpaired, weak muscle, stretches between the posterior surfaces of the two arytenoid cartilages. The muscle brings the arytenoid cartilages closer and thus narrows the vocal cavity, mainly in the posterior part of it.
With the contraction of this muscle on the mucosa, a small intercapital fold is visible, plica interarytenoidea.
3. The vocal muscle , m. Vocalis, also takes part in the narrowing of the glottis.
