Bulbourethral glands
Bulbourethral gland, glandula bulbourethral, paired, in its structure is a complex alveolar-tubular gland. It is located behind the membranous part of the urethra , at the blind end of the bulb of its cavernous body, being enveloped by bundles of deep perineal transverse muscle.
The gland has the dimensions of a pea and a yellowish-brown color. Separate lobules of the gland are connected together by a dense connective tissue. The course of each lobule, joining, form a common duct of the bulbourethral gland, ductus glandulae bulbourethralis, around which are located the fibers of the sphincter of the urethra, m. Sphincter urethrae.
The bulbourethral gland has a length of up to 6 cm, is directed forward and somewhat down, perforates the bulb of the penis and opens into the cavity of the urethra. Sometimes the right and left glands are connected together by means of thin muscular fascicles. Sometimes there are additional glands.
Innervation: n. Pudendus and branches of sympathetic plexuses located around the gland-feeding vessels.
Blood supply: aa. Bulbi penis (a. Pudenda interna). Venous blood flows out by v. Bulbi penis in v. Pudenda interna, and then v. Iliaca interna. Lymphatic vessels divert lymph in the nodi lymphatici iliaci interni.
