Patella
The patellar patella is the largest sesamoid bone of the skeleton. It fits in the thick of the tendon of the quadriceps muscle of the thigh, it is well probed through the skin and with the unbent knee easily shifts to the sides, and also up and down.
The upper edge of the patella is rounded and is called the patellar base, the basis of the patellae. The lower edge extends and forms the apex of the patella.
The anterior surface, facies anterior, bones are rough. The posterior, articular surface, facies articularis, is divided into two unequal parts by means of a vertical scallop: a smaller medial part and a larger lateral part. The posterior surface of the patella articulates with the patellar surface of the femur.
