The upper, proximal, epiphysis of the fibula, epiphysis proximalis fibulae, forms the head of the fibula, caput fibulae, which has an articular surface, facies articularis capitis fibulae, for articulation with the tibia. The upper part of the head is pointed - this is the apex of the head, apex capitis fibulae. The head from the body separates the cervix of the fibula, collum fibulae.
Lower, distal, epiphysis of the fibula, epiphysis distalis fibulae, forms the lateral ankle, malleolus lateralis. The outer surface of the ankle is well probed through the skin. On the medial surface of the ankle is the articular surface of the ankle, facies articularis malleoli, through which the fibula joins the outer surface of the talus, and the above rough surface is with the peroneal tibia.
