Breast-clavicular joint

The sternoclavicular joint, articulatio sternoclavicularis, is formed by a clavic notch of the sternum and the sternal end of the clavicle. The joint is simple.

The articular surfaces are covered with connective tissue cartilage, incongruent and most often saddle-shaped. The mismatch of articular surfaces is equalized by the compound disc located in the joint cavity.

The joint capsule is strong, attached to the edges of the articular surfaces of bones. The joint cavity by the joint disc is divided into two parts that do not communicate with each other - the lower medial part and the upper lateral one. Sometimes the articular disc has a hole in the middle, in these cases, both cavities of the joint communicate with each other.

The ligamentous apparatus of the sternoclavicular joint includes the following ligaments:

1. Anterior and posterior sternoclavicular ligament, ligg. Sternoclaviculare anterius and posterius which are on the anterior, upper and posterior surfaces of the joint capsule, strengthening the latter,

2. Costal ligamentous ligament, lig. Costoclaviculare. Which is a powerful ligament going from the upper edge of the 1st rib up to the collarbone and inhibits its movement upward.

3. Intercluster ligament, lig. Irtterclavicure, taut between the sternal ends of the clavicles over the jugular notch of the sternum; Inhibits movement of the clavicle downwards.

In terms of the volume of movements, the sternoclavicular joint approaches the type of globose, articulatio spheroidea.
