Inter-articular joints

Inter-articular joints, articulationes intermetacarpeae, are formed by the lateral flat surfaces of the bases of II-V metacarpal bones. The joint capsule is attached to the edge of the articular surfaces. The cavities of the joints in the proximal part communicate with the carpometacarpal joints.

There are two groups of ligaments in the interstitial joints. One of them is located on the back and palmar surfaces of the joints - these are the four dorsal metacarpal ligament, ligg. Metacarpea dorsalia, and three palmar metacarpal ligaments, ligg. Metacarpea palmaria. These ligaments are stretched from the back and palmar sides between the bases of the metacarpal bones. Another group of ligaments is between the bases of the metacarpal bones - these are the interosseous metacarpal ligaments, ligg. Metacarpea interossea. Inter-articular joints refer to flat, inactive joints.
