Metacarpophalangeal joints

Pseudo-phalanal joints, articulationes metacarpophalangeae, are formed by the articular surfaces of the heads of metacarpal bones and the articular surfaces of the bases of the first phalanges facing them. The head of the first metacarpal bone is compressed in the anteroposterior direction and has the shape of a block, the rest are spherical. Joint capsules are spacious. They are strengthened in the lateral parts by collateral ligaments, ligg. Collateralia, which begin from depressions on the ulnar and radial surfaces of the metacarpal heads and attach to the lateral and partly palmar surfaces of the bases of the proximal phalanges. Part of the fibers of these ligaments, starting from the lateral surface of the head of metacarpal bones, is directed to the palmar surface of the bases of the proximal phalanges, where it crosses with bundles of the same fibers of the opposite side. These ligaments are called palmar ligaments, ligg. Palmaria.

On the palmar surface of the joints, between the heads of II-V metacarpal bones, deep transverse metacarpal ligaments are ligated, ligg. Metacarpea transversa profunda.

The first metacarpophalangeal joint (thumb) refers to the block joints, and the metacarpophalangeal joints of the II-V fingers are spherical joints.
