Interphalangeal joints of the hand

Interphalangeal joints of the hand , articulationes interphalangeae manus, are between adjacent phalanges of each finger. The articular surface of the head of each phalanx has the form of a block and a guiding groove, and the base of the phalanx carries a flattened articular surface with a guiding scallop.

The ligamentous apparatus of the interphalangeal joints of the hand is represented by the palmar ligaments. Ligg. Pulmaria, some of which come from the lateral surfaces of the blocks and are attached to the lateral surface of the bases of phalanges - collateral ligaments, ligg. Collateralia and others - to their palmar surface.

The thumb (I) has one interphalangeal joint.

Interphalangeal joints of II-V fingers are located between the proximal and middle phalanges and are called proximal interphalangeal joints; Joints between the middle and distal phalanges are called distal interphalangeal joints.

Interphalangeal joints are typical block-shaped joints in which flexion and extension are performed around the frontal axis.
