Transverse joint of tarsum

The transverse joint of the tarsi, articulatio tarsi transversa, unites two joints: talus-calcaneoclavicular, articulatio talocalcaneonavicularis, and heel-cube, articulatio calcaneocuboidea. The line of the joint is S-shaped curved: its medial section is turned convex forward, and lateral - back. Joints are anatomically isolated, but have a common bifurcated ligament, lig. Bifurcatum. This ligament begins on the dorsal surface of the calcaneus, at its anterior margin, and is immediately divided into two ligaments: a lateral heel-cube ligament, lig. Calcaneocuboideum, going to the back surface of the cuboid bone, and medial calcaneoclavicular ligament, lig. Calcaneonaviculare, going to the scaphoid bone.

The forked ligament is also called the key of the transverse tarsal joint, since after cutting all the ligaments located in the circumference of this joint, it holds the bones in the articulation. Only after dissection of the ligament is it possible to isolate the foot in this joint during surgery.
