Subcostal muscles
Subcostal muscles , mm. Subcostales, are located on the inner surface of the lower ribs, in the region of their posterior ends. They have the same origin and direction of muscle bundles as internal intercostal muscles, but differ from intercostal muscles in that their bundles are transferred through one rib.
Function: internal intercostal and subcostal muscles participate in the act of breathing (exhalation).
Innervation: nn. Intercostales (ThI-ThXI).
Blood supply: aa. Intercostales posteriores.
