Lateral ampotrophic sclerosis (bass)

One of the hardest neurological diseases, refers to slowly progressing diseases, inevitably leading to the death of the patient. The movement of a person is carried out by the muscles controlled by the nervous system: an impulse is generated in the motor cortex of the brain, it reaches the spinal cord motor cells, which pick up this electric relay and transmit it to the muscles. When BAS is attacked by spinal neurons, the motor cells in the lateral parts of the spinal cord are dying and can no longer transmit the impulse from brain neurons to the muscles. As a result, these or other parts of the limbs remain immobile. The greatest number of spinal motor cells is in the cervical (hand control) and lumbar (leg control) thickenings. More often the disease affects the cervical level.
Symptoms and course:
The disease develops slowly, gradually, is manifested by weakness in the hands, which gradually spreads to all hands. Then atrophic disorders are attached - muscles lose weight, hands become "clawed paws". The legs are characterized by a high tone: the muscles of the legs are very tense (even in a dream), which does not allow patients to walk. The process of degeneration (death) of nerve cells rises higher - to the brain and when vital centers of breathing or palpitation are lost, patients die.
Recognition:
In the initial stages it is very difficult - special EMG studies (electromyography) are required, but it is early diagnostics that can effectively help the patient and prolong his working capacity and life. If you feel the growing weakness in your hands, their quick fatigue during work, weakness in your legs after walking, you should consult a neurologist.
Treatment is complex: antiviral drugs, drugs that improve microcirculation and the transmission of electrical signals from the nerve to the muscle, massage, physiotherapy.
The prognosis depends on the form of the disease and the stage to the beginning of treatment, but, in general, is more often unfavorable.
