Needs common to all women


Women of all ages are important to get enough iron, zinc and calcium from their food.
During menstruation, blood loss occurs and, depending on the amount of secretion, a lot of iron and zinc can be lost, the sources of which are mainly meat. Women are difficult to provide enough iron in the diet, they need 15 mg of iron per day more than men. Iron is found in many foods, but in large quantities only in products such as the liver, iron-enriched cereals and plum juice. With the exception of cereals, these products are unlikely to be present in the diet of women in sufficient quantities.
"However, in some young women, the need for iron can be small, especially if the menstrual discharge is minimal," says Bonnie Wormington-Roberts, Ph.D., head of the nutrition program at the University of Washington. According to her, "the need for iron in them may not be as great as it could be."
