NALIDIX ACID (Acidum nalidixicum). 1-Ethyl-7-methyl-4-one-1, 8-naphthyridine-3-carboxylic acid.

Crystalline powder light yellow. Insoluble in water.
It is a synthetic antibacterial drug. Effective against infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria, intestinal, dysenteric and typhoid sticks, Proteus, Klebsiella sticks (Friedlander). It acts bacteriostatic and bactericidal. Effective against antibiotic and sulfonamide resistant strains. It is ineffective against gram-positive cocci (staphylococci, streptococci, pneumococci) and pathogenic anaerobes.
The drug is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. About 80% is excreted in the urine unchanged. The elimination half-life is approximately 8 hours, however, in cases of renal failure it reaches 20 hours or more.
Applied mainly for urinary tract infections (cystitis, pyelitis, pyelonephritis) caused by microorganisms sensitive to the drug; most effective in acute infections. It is also prescribed for the prevention of infections during operations on the kidneys and bladder. It is recommended for enterocolitis, cholecystitis, inflammation of the middle ear and other diseases caused by susceptible microorganisms, including those resistant to other antibacterial agents.
Adults take orally at 0.5 g (1 capsule or 1 tablet), and for more severe infections, 1 g 4 times a day. The course of treatment for at least 7 days. With long-term treatment, use 0.5 g 4 times a day.
Children are prescribed at the rate of 60 mg / kg, distributing the daily dose into 4 equal parts.
Nalidixic acid is usually well tolerated; however, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness. There may be allergic reactions (dermatitis, fever, eosinophilia), as well as increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight (photodermatosis).
In patients with impaired cerebral circulation, parkinsonism, epilepsy, seizures may occur. In connection with the possibility of convulsive reactions, one should beware of drug overdose in children. Severe adverse reactions require the temporary or complete withdrawal of the drug.
Contraindications abnormal liver function, depression of the respiratory center. Great care is needed when there is insufficient kidney function. You can not assign women in the first 3 months of pregnancy and children under 2 years.
Do not use the drug simultaneously with nitrofurans, as this decreases the antibacterial effect.
