Ethionamide is thioamide isonicotinic acid. The structure and antibacterial properties similar to isoniazid, but is less active at the same time acts on isoniazid-resistant strains of mycobacteria.
Previously regarded as anti-TB drug II series. At present, more commonly used analog thereof protionamid (cm.).

Ethionamide can be combined with the main anti-TB drugs, if they are retained sensitivity of mycobacteria, as well as with cycloserine and pyrazinamide.
Ethionamide is also used to treat leprosy.
When receiving ethionamide dyspepsia can be observed: appetite loss, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss. There are also skin rashes such as urticaria or exfoliative dermatitis. Occasionally there is insomnia, depression.
