Description of the medicine: Gossypolum

Gossypolum. 2, 2'-Di- (1, 6, 7-trihydroxy-3-methyl-5-isopropyl-8-naphthaldehyde).

A product obtained from the processing of cotton seeds or from the roots of cotton (Gossypium sp.), Family. Malvaceae.

The fine crystalline powder is from light yellow to dark yellow with a greenish tinge. It's getting dark in the light. Almost nerastvorim in water, little soluble in alcohol.

The drug has chemotherapeutic activity against various strains of viruses, including dermatotropic strains of the herpes virus. Has a weak effect on gram-positive bacteria.

Apply as a 3% liniment (Linimentum Gossypoli 3%) - yellow or yellow with a slightly greenish tinge of a thick mass with a peculiar smell. Assign in the treatment of herpes zoster, herpes simplex, psoriasis.

Apply to the affected areas with a thin layer 4 - 6 times a day. The course of treatment is usually 5 to 7 days.

When herpetic keratitis is prescribed: also 0.1% solution of gossypol (in 0.07% aqueous solution of sodium borate). Bury in the conjunctival sac 1 drop every 5 to 6 times a day for 11 to 15 days. Instillations in the eye can be accompanied by burning and flushing that occur when the drug is withdrawn.

Form release: powder; 3% liniment in cans of orange glass (20 g each).

Storage: in a cool, dark place.
