SILVER NITRATE (Argenti nitras).

Synonyms: Lapis, Argentum nitricum.

Colorless transparent crystals in the form of plates or white crystalline rods, odorless. Very easily soluble in water (1: 0.6), soluble in alcohol (1:30). Under the influence of light it gets dark. Incompatible with organic substances (decomposes), with chlorides, bromides, iodides (a precipitate is formed).

In small concentrations, silver nitrate has astringent and anti-inflammatory effect, in stronger solutions burns tissues. It has bactericidal properties.

Applied externally with erosions, ulcers, excessive granulation, cracks, with acute conjunctivitis, trachoma, with chronic hyperplastic laryngitis, etc. Assign in the form of aqueous solutions, ointments, and also in the form of lapis pencils.

External for lubricating the skin and for cauterization apply 2 - 10% solution, 1 - 2% ointment; For lubrication of mucous membranes - 0,25 - 2% solution.

Previously, sometimes prescribed for chronic gastritis and gastric ulcer as an anti-inflammatory agent inward as a 0.05% solution of 10-20 ml (0.005-0.01 g) adult 15 minutes before meals.

Lapis pencil (Stillius Argenti nitratis, Stillius Lapidis) is a solid white or grayish-white conical shaped stick with a rounded apex. Contains 0.18 g of silver nitrate. Applied for moxibustion.

A solution (2%) of silver nitrate was previously widely used for the prevention of blennery in newborns. To do this, immediately after birth, the child wipes his eyelids with cotton wool (a separate tampon each eye), slightly pulls the lower eyelid, lifts the upper and releases a sterile pipette to the conjunctiva, one drop of a 2% solution of silver nitrate. After this, gently release the eyelids. After instillation, the eyes are not rinsed.

Solution of silver nitrate should be fresh (one-day), do not contain sediment.

Currently, 30% sulfacyl solution or other antibacterial drugs are used for this purpose.

Higher doses: for adults inside: single 0.03 g, daily 0.1 g.
