Phenol solutions have strong bactericidal activity against vegetative forms of microorganisms; The spores are weak.
Apply in the form of 3% or 5% solution for disinfection of household and hospital items, tools, laundry, excreta, etc. Soap-carbolic solution is used for disinfection of premises. Phenol is also used for pest control purposes; Phenol-kerosene, phenol-oxy-dicharic and other mixtures are used.
In pharmaceutical practice phenol (0.5 - 0.1%) is used for preserving medicinal substances, serums, suppositories, etc.
In medical practice, phenol is sometimes prescribed for certain skin diseases (sycosis, etc.) and for inflammatory diseases of the middle ear.
Phenol acts on the skin and mucous membranes as an irritant and cauterizing agent, easily absorbed through them and can cause toxic effects (dizziness, general weakness, respiratory distress, collapse) in large doses. Phenol should not therefore be used for common skin and mucous membrane lesions.
