Potassium perchlorate (Kalii perchloridum).

Synonyms: Chlorigene (C), Kalium perchloricum.

White crystalline substance without a smell. Slightly soluble in water, insoluble in alcohol.

It is an antithyroid (thyreostatic) substance. The mechanism of action of the drug is associated with inhibition of the ability of the thyroid gland to accumulate iodine, which leads to inhibition of the formation of thyroxine.

Applied mainly with light and medium forms of toxic goiter.

Assign inside before eating. Doses and duration of treatment are set individually depending on the patient's condition, the severity of the disease, the effectiveness of the treatment, the tolerability of the drug.

The therapeutic dose is 0.5-1 g per day (in 2-4 admission). Higher doses should not be used. The total duration of treatment is 1 year on average.

After drug cancellation, relapses are possible.

To prepare for operations on the thyroid gland, it is not advisable to use potassium perchlorate, since it takes a long time to manifest the antithyroid effect; In addition, there is likely increased bleeding gland.

The treatment with potassium perchlorate should be done under close supervision of the doctor.

When the drug is used, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, dyspeptic phenomena, impaired liver function, fever, zobogenic effect and other side effects are possible. During the treatment, a weekly blood test is necessary.

The use of iodine after the cancellation of potassium perchlorate may lead to an exacerbation of thyrotoxicosis.

The drug is contraindicated in pregnancy, peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum, diseases of the hematopoietic system.
