Like other pyrazolone derivatives, antipyrine has analgesic, antipyretic and to some extent anti-inflammatory effect. Analgesic and antipyretic activity of this group of drugs are close to derivatives of salicylic acid. The derivatives of pyrazolone reduce the permeability of capillaries and prevent the development of an inflammatory reaction. The mechanism of this action is not clear. Influences on the pituitary-adrenal system these compounds do not exert.

The most active anti-inflammatory drug of this group - butadione - relatively strongly inhibits the biosynthesis of prostaglandins. It is classified as a group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
